Comando G is the winemaking venture of Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia, with a focus upon old vine Grenache (Garnacha) from the rugged Gredos mountains to the West of Madrid.
It's important to say from the outset that these wines are not in the mould of sometimes overly ripe, extracted Grenache with high alcohol levels. Comando G (the G stands for Grenache) approach their winemaking in a way which exhibits elegance, refinement and a lightness of touch.
Rumbo Al Norte is a 'Grand Cru' wine from the valley of Alto Alberche, the grapes coming from a plot near the village of Villanueva De Avila. This is maybe the most profound of all their single vineyard wines. The elevation and north facing aspect demands ripening into October. This plot imbues the Grenache with darker, sweeter, spicier flavours than the lighter tones of some of their other cuvees, but it never loses the elegance and minerality for which these wines are rightly famed.
The 2019 vintage scored 99/100 from Wine Advocate.
They observe organic and biodynamic farming. The grapes are hand harvested the wine undergoes a long, gentle maceration with natural yeast fermentation and then over a year in large oak foundre.
The project success is in elevating the sometimes very ordinary Grenache varietal into something very special - almost Burgundian Pinot Noir in it's overall presentation. One of the most exciting new-school wine producers in Spain right now.
